What is Male Pattern
Hair Loss?
Male Pattern Hair Loss, also known as Androgenetic Alopecia
is the most common form of hair loss seen in men. Hair
loss can begin any time after puberty, but most commonly
begins among men in their twenties.
It is caused by certain male hormones. The most well
known male hormone is testosterone. An enzyme found
in skin cells, and hair follicles convert this hormone
into the more potent dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Why do men lose their
hair?
Many factors can influence hair loss. The typical hair
loss is driven by DHT. It shrinks hair follicles making
it impossible for healthy hair to survive.
DHT forms in your scalp, thins your hair at varying
rates of speed, and prevents blood circulation on your
scalp.
Eventually, the hair follicles remain dormant resulting
in hair loss, but are not replaced with new hair growth.
Men who suffer Male Pattern Hair Loss have high levels
of DHT in their scalp.
Does hair loss happen
gradually?
Men will experience progressive hair loss and follow
a predictable pattern. During the first stage, hair
usually stops growing at the hairline and starts to
recede from the forehead. Hair becomes thinner. Soon,
hair loss also starts at the crown area of the head.
Hair continues to recede whilst the bald spot at the
crown widens. Eventually, the thinning crown and receding
point may meet.
